The campaigning at social events, the door knocking, the billboards and yard signs will all go away next week after voters in the tri-county area – and the rest of the state – go to the polls in primary election voting Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. For a look at the sample ballots for Camden, Miller and Morgan counties, see the Friday edition of The Lake Sun.

The election should end one of the most contentious campaigns among several offices in recent memory. Although this is the primary election where each party picks their favored candidate for the November General Election, there is a scant number of Democrats on the Lake-area ballots. Any Republicans or Democrats running unopposed in the Primary Election automatically advance to the General Election.

Probably the most talked about race is for Camden County Presiding Commissioner where incumbent Greg Hasty is being challenged by four other Republicans – former presiding commissioner Kris Franken, Lydia Porter, Nathan Patton, and Ike Skelton. Hasty has been dogged by a barrage of claims on social media, and the other candidates are taking advantage of those controversies in throwing their hats into the ring. Each believes they can do a better job.

The other race to watch is for the Camden County prosecuting attorney between incumbent Caleb Cunningham and Richelle Christensen Grosvenor, herself a municipal judge, attorney and former prosecuting attorney. Like Hasty, Cunningham has been attacked on social media.

While those races have garnered the most attention, there are other contests to watch. These include:

Circuit Clerk – with Circuit Clerk Jo McElwee’s retirement, two individuals with considerable experience have stepped forward for a chance her seat. Karen Clopton and Kayla Henry are on the ballot and have been seen frequently visiting with potential voters at various social events.

Associate Circuit Judge – Heather Miller and Ryan Bridges

There are only three local races on the ballot.

Presiding Commissioner – Kevin Cardwell and Bob Toalson are vying for the seat currently held by retiring Tom Wright.

Prosecuting Attorney – Matt Howard and Gerald “Jay” Harms, Jr., hope to fill the seat currently held by retiring Ben Winfrey.

Recorder of Deeds – Kathy (Kate) Plemmons and Jenna Lawson.

Treasurer – Rhonda Campbell and Bill Black are competing for that open seat.

State legislative races, Camden County

State Senator District 6 – Mike Bernskoetter and Scott Riedel

State Representative District 123 – Lisa Thomas and Mindy Martin.

State Representative District 142 – Jeff Knight and Royce E. Tuck.

State Legislative races, Miller County

State Senator District 6 – Mike Bernskoetter and Scott Riedel.

State Legislative races, Morgan County

State Senator District 6 – Mike Bernskoetter and Scott Riedel.

State Representative District 58 – Casey Pemberton and Willard Haley

Judgeship races affecting Miller, Morgan and Camden counties

Circuit Judge Circuit 26 Division 2 – Kenny Hayden and Fawzy Simon.

Note: There are no Lake-area races on the Democrat ticket, but there are Democrat candidates who will be on the November General Election ballot.
